Contra Costa CERTMany of you may have had questions regarding the use of cell phones and 911 calls. As you know 911 calls from cell phones in the Bay Area go directly to the CHP Dispatch Center in Vallejo. Some have had varying experiences when calling 911 from their cell phones, such as long delays or no answer at all.

In our classes we had been providing the Contra Costa Sheriff's Dispatch Center Lamorinda direct telephone number, 284-5010. Some CERT instructors have not only given out this number but one or two additional Dispatch numbers as well. These numbers cannot be transferred directly to other agencies. 284 is a Lamorinda prefix set up for direct calls from Moraga, Orinda or Lafayette, but cannot be transferred directly to other agencies.

This note is to provide you with the correct direct telephone number for the Contra Costa County Sheriff Dispatch Center. Please change the number in your cell phone contacts directory to 925-228-8282 (this is a new number!). This telephone number is in rotary and will ring additional numbers if 2441 is busy. Also, this is the only number that can be transferred, when required, to other emergency public agencies; e.g. ConFire dispatch, CHP, Town or City Police Departments.  Nevertheless, you should continue to use a land line whenever possible and to use this number when needed and from within Contra Costa County.

Regards,
Gordon Nathan

Disaster Preparedness Tip: Practice makes perfect

Conduct fire drills and practice evacuating your home twice a year. Drive your planned evacuation route and plot alternate routes on a map in case main roads are impassible or gridlocked. Practice earthquake and tornado drills at home, school and work. Commit a weekend to update phone numbers, disaster supplies and review your plan with everyone.
