Recently, Peter Steinbach, a Lamorinda CERT graduate, was able to use what he had learned in CERT Training. He arrived at the scene of an accident near Lafayette in Highway 24. A vehicle had rolled over and a woman had been ejected. Peter was the 5th person on the scene.
When he arrived nobody had started to give First Aid. Peter jumped into action and had some really scary moments when he thought that the woman was going into shock, possibly because of internal bleeding. Peter drew upon what he learned during CERT training and managed to keep the woman alert until the paramedics arrived. It was until later that Peter learned that some of the people on the scene were nurses, who saw him perform First Aid and thought (correctly) that everything was under control. Peter told us about the need for CERTs to practice what they have learned. He wrote: “The real lesson I think I walked away with is that this stuff has to be practiced. I didn't do much of the "p" part of RPM. I should have done the fingernail test instead of the wrist. Fortunately it all turned out OK, and next time I'll try to pay more attention to that.” |
