Lamorinda CERT and the Lafayette Emergency Preparedness Commission will present a free Lafayette Safety Fair and CERT Exhibition at Stanley Middle School from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, August 30. Exhibitors will include: police, fire, Emergency Management Services, Red Cross, Medical Reserve Corps, Contra Costa Sheriff’s Office, Contra Costa Animal Services, CalFire, and the East Bay Regional Park District.

Helicopters will be landing on the field. A bike rodeo with an obstacle course to teach kids how to ride safely to school will be offered by police. A child car seat installation check will be available.

East Bay Regional Parks will have their mounted patrol. The Sheriff’s Office will have boats and dogs. ConFire and CalFire will have fire engines. AMR will bring an ambulance.

The Red Cross and Animal Services’ Animal Response Team will be there to demonstrate a simulated sheltering of residents and pets during a large emergency.

CERT members will show you some of what the team members learn during their basic training series. Included will be how to secure items in your home for earthquake preparedness; hands-on fire extinguisher training; disaster medical operations including triage, head-to-toe evaluation and treatment; radio communications; and search and rescue. Psychologists will talk with parents about disaster psychology and how to deal with children following an earthquake or wildfire.

Lamorinda CERT will also have their new Volunteer Reception Center on site. In the VRC spontaneous volunteers will be interviewed, credentialed and placed at a job site following a disaster.

Moulage, the art of applying simulated wounds will also be demonstrated. This is always a big hit with kids. Parents can learn how to apply moulage for that extra Halloween effect.
